Mylar Bags for Food Storage

Mylar is a polyester film developed in the 1950's. Mylar bags and oxygen absorbers have been used because it has high tensile strength, and it prevents moisture, light, gas, and aroma from getting inside the bag. It is also considered a good insulator against electrical disturbances. When it comes to food storage, many believe that Mylar bags are the best for all the reasons we have already stated.

Mylar bags are also often called metalized storage bags or dry pack pouch. The commonly used bag sizes are the one gallon size and the five gallon size. There are other sizes available but these two are the most commonly used.

The gallon bags can store grains, dried powdered food, spices, candy, salts, and baking ingredients. They can also help store you valuable items like ammo and medical supplies. The five gallon bags are used to line 6 gallon plastic buckets. You place your bag inside the bucket and fill it is with the food product you will store. Then before putting a tight lid on the bucket, the bag must be sealed. This type of storage protects your food against time, moisture, light, and rodents. Sealing a Mylar bag can be quite a challenge. For an easy method, you can use a hair straightening iron to seal the top of the bag when you have filled it with your dry food and an oxygen absorber.

Do not make the bag too full. The oxygen absorber inside will suck up all the oxygen and leaves nitrogen in the extra space.

The bag seal should be on the top inch so that if you need to open the bag to get some supplies, you still have space to seal it back again. Then add a new oxygen absorber before sealing.

To ensure a good seal when the product is flour, make sure you wipe the inner edges before sealing.

After closing your bags, check them after a few days. You should notice a bit of compression with the bags. If there is no compression noticed then the seal might not be a good one, of there is a hole in the Mylar bag. If after a few days, it is still not compressed then you need to start the sealing process again.

You can include the original plastic pack of pasta inside the bag. But before sealing, you must cut a hole in the pasta plastic so the oxygen can be absorbed even from the pasta plastic.

You should not expose this package to heat. The package should be stored in temperatures below 85 degrees of lower. Visit http://www.usaemergencysupply.com/information-center/packing-your-own-food-storage/why-use-mylar-bags-in-food-storage to read more.
